PRESS RELEASE

Emily Gadacz Annouces 2014 Haertling House Design Competition

Boulder, CO – 31 Jan 2014

In collaboration with the University of Colorado’s School of Environmental Design, and Stephen Sparn Architects, Emily Gadacz, Broker Associate at Colorado Landmark, Realtors announces the 2014 Haertling Home Design Contest.  This contest gives graduate students of CU’s School of Environmental Design the opportunity to enter a local design competition and win a cash prize.  Students will submit design concepts and plans for the renovation of the main floor of Menkick House, located at 165 Greenrock Drive in Boulder, designed by famous local architect Charles Haertling and built in 1969.   More than 40 of Haertling’s structures dot Boulder’s neighborhoods, and he’s recognized for combining elements of modernism and organic architecture into his work. Some have compared his work to that of Frank Lloyd Wright.

Haertling designed the Menkick House to relate to a massive rock outcrop that dominates the one-acre West Boulder site. The outcrop is integrated into the structure’s exterior in three different areas. At one point, beams extend from the house and seem to be embedded in the boulder. The neutral horizontal roofline doesn’t compete with the rock formations; rather it seems to almost disappear, calling attention to the boulders while giving the house equal prominence. The structure and the outcropping are perfectly in sync with each other.

“As a longtime resident and Realtor in Boulder, it is undeniable that the Menkick House epitomizes everything that is Boulder – beautiful, unique and connected to its natural surroundings.  The house has so many incredible features, but among the most dramatic is its location and integration into the landscape. I am honored and delighted to collaborate with Stephen Sparn, a talented and well-respected architect, and to support our community through the innovative CU students who are competing to assist with a fresh design for the interior of the home. This property is currently listed for sale,” comments Gadacz who is also the listing agent on the property.

Each student will submit a renovation proposal for the main level of the home, interior only, and plans should include materials and may incorporate the stair cases if desired. The deadline for submissions is Thursday, February 6th, 2014.

Stephen Sparn of Stephen Sparn Architects will select the winner during a catered award ceremony at the Menkick House the evening of February 11th.  “I feel that the Menkick House (Currently owned by Stephen Churner) which was built in 1969 is one of Boulder Architect Charles Heartling’s best homes that he designed.  This home is nestled into a beautiful rock formation and has strong Frank Lloyd Wright influences.  I look forward to seeing how young designers might compliment this design with their design concepts,” says Sparn.  The winner will receive a cash prize, as well as recognition in the local community and a letter of commendation.
